Jim Windholz, city attorney for Golden, Sheridan, Lafayette and Edgewater, CO. and long-time Greyhound adopter and supporter,
passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the age of 65. Praised by his peers for his wisdom, honesty and
integrity; his
loss is sorely felt by all who knew him. He is survived by Dru Dunham; mother, Alice Windholz;
sons Eric and Grant; his daughter Amy Lawrence; brothers Frank and Ken; four grandchildren; and Seth the Greyhound.
Jim Windholz always had a love of animals. He liked to hold his family's pet rabbits, and he often spoke fondly of his
first dog, a little black mixed breed named Tip, from his childhood days in Hays, Kansas.
Seth the Greyhound, Jim and Dru's only "child" came to live with them in March of 2001. Seth's registered NGA name was
W.W. Drake, but he was called Seth, which means "spiritual teacher". It was Jim's idea to adopt Seth, because Jim developed
a fondness for the Greyhound that made rounds at Dru's mother's assisted living community. When they first adopted Seth,
from Recycled Racers, Seth didn't know how to climb stairs or play, and didn't know to safely maneuver through glass doors. In fact, Jim accidentally
let Seth walk right into the glass entrance door to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital when Seth was getting his check-up!
The first time Seth saw the mirror in Jim's closet, he thought his reflection was another Greyhound and he started to play. Seth
learned to trust and love by being with Jim and Dru, and he brings a quiet strength and calm wherever he goes. Jim never
denied the fact that Seth favored his "mother" Dru over him, but he sure did love Seth. Jim would leave his office early
to run home and take care of Seth before heading out to meetings for the evening. Although Jim teased Seth about some of
his goofy habits, he showered him with love and affection.
Dru and the Windholz family are certain that wherever his spirit is now, there are many very happy animals around him enjoying
his company.
Dru Dunham and Jim's family requested that memorial donations be sent to Recycled Racers, Inc. to help the Greyhounds still waiting
for good adoptive homes after their racing careers are over. We at Recycled Racers wish to sincerely thank everyone who sent a
memorial donation in Jim Windholz honor. We are so grateful and truly hope that Jim is pleased and watching over all of us and
the Greyhounds in our care.
