In Loving Memory of

Unique (Carmella)     9/14/99 – 1/04/2005

Dear Sandy Johnson,

Our family adopted a Greyhound from Recycled Racers back in March of 2004.  Her racing name was CallForAGoodTime and her kennel name was Unique.  She was a beautiful, sweet, full of love Fawn-colored female Greyhound.  We came to call her "Carmella".  I am so sad to report that Unique/Carmella died on January 4, 2005. We are devastated.

Last month, Carmella became ill very suddenly with no known new injury or trauma.  Numerous vet and neurologist visits and diagnostic tests could tell us nothing more than she was suffering from a brain disease of unknown origin.  Doctors knew there was inflammation in the cerebellum section of her brain, but they never figured out why it was there.  They did eventually rule out tick-borne diseases.  The neurologist performed a spinal fluid test on her last Tuesday, January 4th, to try to figure out what was causing her symptoms, and the fluid was all wrong.  Carmella died on the day of that procedure; her heart gave out.

We are so sorry to tell you this.  We did everything we possibly could to help her.  We just wanted you, Toni and Marnie to know about Unique, since we remember how much you all cared about her.  You were so right--she was the perfect Greyhound for our family, and we all shared some very special times.  We regret that our time with her was so brief, but we know she retired well and loved her adoptive home and new family very much.

The deafening Sound of Silence

by Christopher Tetro

How could you?

You spoke hardly a word in our short time together.  Our house is still full of love and life but your absence has created an unmistakable emptiness.  I'm not sure why your stay with us was so brief but you have left an indelible spot on our hearts.  The other day Mommy wore her black boots , you know the ones that clatter on the hardwood.  They used to put you in an excited tizzy and it would lift me from my seat.  Cal jingled your collar causing my head to spin and Claire prays for you nightly with the understanding that you are at peace but missed.  Not a day has passed that I regret our time together.  Your place is not with us anymore but your memory stays with us evermore.

How could you?  Who am I to ask, but in your silence, I'm grateful you did.
