We first met our Greyhound Nala in February of 1995. She was a beautiful girl with similar coloring as our male Greyhound. He
was a handful and in dire need of a Greyhound house mate. Nala was adopted at 2 years of age because it appeared
she would never be a winning racing dog. When we first saw her, we knew right away that she would be part of our family. Nala had those Bambi eyes
and we fell for her right away. Those eyes proved true throughout the time we spent with her.
Nala was a shy girl and did not adjust well to change. She barked widely at plastic bags blowing in the wind and she hid down the hallway for weeks when we installed the ceiling fan in the dining room. Our other Greyhounds watched over her, nurtured her and eventually she became less frightened of new things over the years. Outside time was her favorite and about the only time she was really a social butterfly. Nala was a "smiler", lifting her lips showing a wide toothy grin when she was very happy. Nala smiled a lot throughout her life when excited and often scared people who were unfamiliar with the Greyhound smile....but it wasn't an aggressive act, it was just her sheer excitement and joy of life that made her smile. She was also a tail tucker. Our last morning with her, she simply tucked her tail - there was no smile to accompany it. When we left her that morning, we had no idea that would be the last time we would pat her head and tell her to have a great day. While having her dental cleaning at the vets, our little Nala's heart stopped on the table. Nothing they did could bring her back. The doctors did their best. The vet found out later that Nala had an enlarged heart that was not detectable through all of the tests that were completed. Her blood pressure and tests were normal. Who could have known? The grief of losing the third of our original three dogs has been beyond us. We did all we could and would have done more had the options been there. We miss Nala so very much. Abe, our newest Greyhound, still walks around smelling all the areas where Nala layed - I guess he can still smell and sense her even though the carpet has since been replaced. Bless his heart. Nala came to us for love and attention and we gave it freely. We find comfort knowing she has gone to the Rainbow Bridge where her true loves await her. We rejoice in the thought of Nala entering their realm and once again frolicking with her own.
