In Loving Memory of

TX's Spooner (Spooner)     Nov. 2000 – Jan. 2004

Dear Recycled Racers,

I wish I had written a letter telling you all about Spooner's adventures with our family.  It would have been a letter full of funny stories; like the time he was teased by a raven, or his clumsy steps on our first hike together, or about the collection of baby dolls he arranged on his bed.  It would have been a letter full of pride explaining how Spooner turned heads at Disneyland in California.  He made a lasting impression there; from the father asking his children to take a look at "that beautiful Greyhound", to the worker complimenting Spooner for his excellent behavior.

The letter would have told you of his heroism; how he put himself between my two year old daughter and the mean goat with fourteen inch horns.  I'll never forget that questioning look in Spooner's eyes when he saw the goat preparing to push my daughter.  He sensed there was trouble, but he needed confirmation from me.  As soon as I yelled at the goat, Spooner was off to "save" my little girl.

But since loosing Spooner from an operation he never woke up from, this isn't such a letter.  We had him for such a short time.  I can barely comprehend the strong attachment we all feel for this noble beast.  For if any words could describe him, they would be "stoic" and "regal".  Even the bible compares the Greyhound to the king of beasts, against whom there is no rising up.

We placed his ashes under the southern sky, where Canis Major, the dog star, chases rabbits across the sky.

Yours in sorrow,
Libby Meador
