In Loving Memory of

TV Crow (Crow)     12/24/96 - 08/12/04

Crow came into our lives by destiny.  If ever an event was "predetermined", this was it.

My husband, Phillip, wanted to adopt a very large dog.  We ended up with a 3-year old miniature Poodle.  When we saw the squalor she was living in, we couldn't walk away without taking her with us.  Later, we found out that she had been physically abused, as well.  Ebony was a real cutie, full of life, and very playful.  She seemed to need some company during the day while we were at work and the idea of adopting another dog came up.  After doing some research and reading several articles about how ex-racing Greyhounds need good homes, I suggested to Phillip that maybe a greyhound would be the perfect fit for our family.

Next thing I knew, Phillip came home from our local Petco store with a Greyhound adoption application.  He had gotten it from the Recycled Racers Meet-n-Greet participants.  I immediately filled out the application but we did not send it in for over a year.  However, within days of sending it in, we found our family, with Ebony in tow, at the Recycled Racers adoption kennel.  The first Greyhound we saw was a very large red brindle male, TV Crow.  But we were told that he was on reserve for someone else.  So, we chose a small, Red Brindle female named Peaches and took her for a walk with us and Ebony.  Upon our return to the kennel, we passed a lady walking Crow.  She paused, and then asked if we would like to switch dogs.  We were agreeable.  Fate took it from there.  It was a match made in heaven.  And Peaches' new owner became a good friend to us, as well.

At first Crow was timid and frightened.  We did everything we could think of to make him feel loved and welcome.  But he didn't seem to know how to respond.  We got him a crate which was the only place he felt secure in the first few months.  He didn't know how to play.  We got him a little, white "Harley" bear for his first toy but he didn't know what to do with it.  It took a good 6 months but once Crow figured out how to play, he never stopped!  He rapidly grew into his own and soon overshadowed Ebony as the alpha dog.  However, Ebony would stand on her back legs and then could just reach Crow's nose as if to say she could hold her own with him.

Crow and Ebony became best buddies.  They played and played and played.  Crow was considerate and gentle with her.  He would jump over her rather than risk stepping on her; she would just walk right under his belly.  Ebony would steal his bones so Crow would chase her.  Most of our friends had little dogs.  They loved to bring them over to play with Crow.  Crow was insatiable.  He couldn't get enough fun and play time.  He would chase those little dogs for hours.  We laughed so hard for so long that we begged Crow to give us a break.

Our Crow, a.k.a Crow Dog, was a most unique Greyhound.  He exuded charisma.  Total strangers were drawn to him.  He was striking in appearance.  When he completely pricked up both ears, they were perfect diamond shapes exactly like the drawings of the Egyptian royalty Greyhounds.  He would "talk" to us and he tried to chauffeur our SUV to the dog park by himself!!  He chased all the geese out of the park and walked back to us with such a satisfied look of accomplishment.

Thanks to Crow we became loyal Greyhound advocates and volunteers for Recycled Racers.  He hooked us in hook, line, and sinker.  Thank you, Crow.  You enriched our lives more than you will ever know.
